Retro is in – check this out: Kohlers’ has bathroom retro advice in an article called Reinventing Retro: http://www.us.kohler.com/planning/detail.jsp?aid=1115489476370 I’m thinking that retro means different eras to different people, depending on the age of the individual. I still remember my son telling me that he loved “old” cars that were from the 1970’s. It took…
Rose Construction now has a Certified Renovator for safe renovation techniques when working in homes with lead paint. Our Project Manager, DyLon McClary, CGR, received his Lead Safety Certification for Remodeling, Repair and Painting, on March 23. The new EPA regulation goes into effect on April 22 this year. The Rule requires that strict procedures…
We are located in the Pacific Northwest; it is very green here, which is caused by a lot of rain. Contrary to other parts of the country, we do not get lots of rain and then the sun comes out; we get lots of clouds that drizzle for months on end. Some find this tedious…
Instead of going through the expense and hassle of moving, the current trend is to stay where we are and remodel to make our homes more efficient and attractive, or to add on a room if our budget allows. There is a great website that has a pretty comprehensive coverage of the options in re-designing…
One of my greatest fears when the temperature dips into the 20’s or below and STAYS there (thankfully this doesn’t happen too often in Bellingham, Washington, but it DOES happen from time to time). Maybe because it doesn’t happen every year I (we) are not clear on what the heck to do to prevent frozen…
On December 16th Pat Rose, of Rose Construction Inc, received the 2009 Remodeler of the Year award from the Building Industry Association of Whatcom County (BIAWC). The award recognizes Pat and her team of master carpenters for excellence in home remodeling. Rose Construction Inc. is one of the founding members of Master Remodelers Council of…
Trent from the Simple Dollar, one of my favorite blogs, writes a recurring post called the “Weekly Roundup.” In it he links to his favorite online articles from the week. As I read entirely too many blogs I decided to follow his lead and link to great articles in remodeling, construction, interior design and architecture.…
Pat was in the Better Business Journal’s article “BIAWC awards top remodelers” showing her three new REX awards! Congrats. And, in case you’re wondering where we’ve been, please be patient… I’ve been working on a very long post about subway tile. It has been taking WAY longer than expected but hopefully it will answer all…
While the intent of this blog is not to help with buying a home, I found some advice that was too good to pass up. This article is aimed toward the “Flipper” but gives some great information about what to look for when buying a home. Obviously your inspector should be looking for these issues, but…
As of tomorrow, Notes from the Field will be two months old. We are currently 8 views away from breaking 400 page views and this post is our 30th. I just want to take a moment to thank everybody who has come to this blog. I hope you’ve found some useful information. If you have…
While Rose Construction generally does all the painting for our projects, every once in a while we get a client who would rather paint him- or herself to keep costs down. Painting, though it initially seems easy, requires a lot of prep work in order to get a professional looking finish. After all, who wants…
This blog is one and half months old now. I started thinking about the highlights and my favorite posts so far. That got me looking through our stats, curious about which have been our readers’ favorites. After viewing the results, I thought links to our most popular posts/pages (in case you missed them!) and a…
Every year the National Association of Home Builders (NAHBR) and the Builders Industry Association of Whatcom County (BIAWC) host the Excellence in Remodeling (REX) Awards. This year we submitted four projects and last night Pat won for THREE of them! I’ve written about all the projects we submitted, so please click on the links to…
Scary news, folks. It’s almost gutter season. I know, that word strikes fear in many a homeowner. One of those homeowners might even ask why they should be cleaned at all. It’s actually an extremely important task. Water has to go somewhere. If it is blocked from the gutter because of obstructions such as leaves…
The newest addition to our Rose Construction team, Janet, will be starting on Tuesday. She will be filling the Office Manager and Contract Administrator position. With many years of experience in engineering, drafting and cost management, we think she’ll fit right in and be a wonderful asset. So, if you call in, be sure to…
I am extremely proud and flattered to inform you that our post CSI: Not Just for TV Anymore was linked to in this week’s official CSI Weekly e-newsletter. Be sure to check both out!
By CSI I mean the Construction Specifications Institute’s MasterFormat 2004, of course. CSI MasterFormat is essentially the Dewey Decimal system of the construction industry. In CSI MasterFormat there are two major groups: (1) Procurement and Contracting Requirements and (2) Specifications. The first group contains the paperwork to start, finish and keep the project running, such as…
Happy 40th to John, our accountant! In his off time he plays music and hangs out with his daughter. Over the weekend he had a birthday bbq where this adorable photo was taken: Happy Birthday John! For those who are interested, today is also the birthday of Virginia Dare, the first child born to English…
On Friday the website Curbly linked to Zanic Design’s Inside Out Chair. This is a double chair where one chair literally slips inside the other. The interior chair is made of redwood while the exterior chair is made of Corian. Yes, THAT Corian, the one that goes on your countertops! We are authorized Corian installers…

Every time we receive a new client we ask them where they heard from us. We’re a small company and are interested in these sort of things! This blog is new and I’m wondering how people are finding us here as well. If you could answer the following question I’d greatly appreciate it! Also, if…
Visit Click to Empower, a website supporting domestic violence survivors. Votes are accepted until September 15th and whichever charity gets the most clicks receives a $100,000 grant. There are four choices: Charity Cars, Family Justice Centers, Safe Horizon and the YWCA. Our choice? The YWCA, but all are great causes. Regardless of which you choose,…
Though we’ve had a website for quite a while, Rose Construction has recently decided to take advantage of social media. So, feel free to visit us on Facebook, Myspace, Yelp and Twitter. I (Melissa) just set up the Twitter account this morning and FINALLY understand why everyone is addicted to it! We’re planning to use Twitter…
Congratulations to our project manager DyLon McClary and his wife Brooke, who married yesterday!
