Age proofing your bathroom
Most of us plan on staying in our homes for the rest of our lives. So it makes sense to upgrade as much of the house as possible to make it accessible, no matter what the future holds.
People probably most often think of the bathroom in terms of safety, and how to make it easy for any family member to use safely. Which make sense, with all the moisture and hard edges on materials, as well as we often are barefoot in the tub or shower.
Ideas to consider for that next upgrade;
- Bench in the shower
- Hand held shower head; one with a sliding shower head is an added benefit
- Grab bars are desirable for everyone; they can be selected with the same finish and style as the other fixtures in the shower and sink
- Consider a higher than standard vanity height to standard kitchen counter height
- Comfort height toilets (17-19 inches) will make it easier for older persons to sit and stand up. Standard toilets are a bit low (16 inches).
- Good quality lighting, including night lights
- Non-slip floor tile
There are no doubt more things to consider, but ask your contractor what he or she recommends, and a little research online will help with suggestions as well. We get a lot of calls for replacing a tub with a low-threshold shower, as these are easier to step into. Give us a call, we can help with suggestions and installation.
