What is the smart way to update a bathroom?

One of the most expensive ways to remodel a bathroom is to relocate the primary plumbing fixtures; the toilet and shower. Moving these means all the pipes in the walls and floor will have to move as well, and depending on the direction the floor joists run, this could really require some major changes to the joists. Plus the waste pipes require vent pipes, these run up inside the walls, and if the walls are moved, the pipes have to relocate as well.

So it is smart, if you can, to keep the fixtures where they are as much as possible. There is a lot that can be done in a bathroom remodel with that restriction. However if you really need to relocate any of the plumbing, a good contractor can help you find the least expensive way to do that.

Keeping fixtures mostly where they are can still allow a wonderful bathroom upgrade. For instance, a tub/ shower can be removed and a full shower installed in the same location, keeping those pipes pretty much where they are. A brand new tiled shower with new fixtures will make a tremendous improvement on any master bath.

How about heated floors and towel rack? A new, properly sized exhaust fan will help keep that bathroom smelling fresh. Lighting that is flexible for nighttime, morning prep and showers will keep you in a good mood all day.
